General Information on PEARSON TECHNOLOGIES' Training

PEARSON TECHNOLOGIES' training programs are designed for groups of 6 or more. In most cases, we deliver training at a client's site. Occasionally, we deliver programs at a hotel conference room near the client's site or in the area of Kennesaw or Woodstock, Georgia.

For most programs, PEARSON TECHNOLOGIES provides a text and a book of the PowerPoint slides used in the program. These become useful references.

For installation programs, PEARSON TECHNOLOGIES provides all materials, supplies, and equipment. For some presentations, we use client's equipment. In some cases, we train with the products requested by the client.

We deliver installation programs with or without certification by the Fiber Optic Association (FOA). Standard programs can lead to the following certifications: CFOT, CFOS/C, CFOS/T, CFOS/S. Custom programs can lead to other FOA certifications.

For installation programs, the texts provided are Professional Fiber Optic Installation, v.10, PowerPoint Slides for Professional Fiber Optic Installation, v.10, and Certification and Troubleshooting Fiber Optic Networks.

For design programs, the texts provided are: Mastering Fiber Optic Network Design, Mastering Fiber Optic Network Design: Presentation Slides. In addition, we provide 32 Excel spreadsheets for use in the hands-on design activities and the design activities after the program.

Basic Installation Training

Professional Fiber Optic Installation (Fiberpro™ 1)

This 32-hour program combines lectures and hands-on training. The lectures provide the trainee with an understanding of fiber optic link operation, an understanding of the essential terms, recognition of appropriate performance numbers, and the reasons behind the rules of installation. These reasons reinforce adherence to the rules.

The lectures cover the following chapters in Professional Fiber Optic Installation, v.10: 2-6, 8, 10-11, 14-15, and 19-20.

The 40 hands-on activities represent approximately 70-75% of the program. The activities include:

• Handling of Bare Fiber
• Installation of Hot Melt Connectors
• Installation of Cleave & Crimp Connectors
• Inspection of Hot Melt Connectors
• Evaluation of Cleave & Crimp Connectors
• Preparation of Both Tight Tube & Loose Tube Cable Ends for Both Midspan Splicing & Termination
• Insertion Loss Testing
• Range Testing
• OTDR Testing
• Fusion Splicing
• Mechanical Splicing
• Calculation of Acceptance Values
• Link Troubleshooting

Advanced Installation Training

Advanced Fiber Optic Installation (FiberPro™ 2)

The objective of this 40-hour program is to enable trainees to field install connectors correctly, the first time, every time. FiberPro™ 2 combines FiberPro™ 1 with additional repetitions to take the trainee 'up the learning curve.' The repetitions are of connector installation, connector inspection, connector evaluation, and insertion loss testing.

In FiberPro™ 2, trainees install, evaluate, and test 24 connectors instead of 4, as in FiberPro™ 1. The lectures cover the following chapters in Professional Fiber Optic Installation, v.10: 2-6, 8, 10-12, 14-15, and 19-20. The 170 hands-on activities consume approximately 75% of the program.

When presented with the optional FOA CFOT certification examination, FiberPro™ 2 is a 48-hour program. When presented with both the optional FOA CFOT and CFOS/C certification examinations, FiberPro™ 2 is a 52-hour program. See detailed Agenda here.

Advanced Fiber Optic Testing (FiberPro™3)

The primary objective of this 24-hour program is to enable trainees to perform the tests of fiber optic links essential to indicating proper and reliable operation. These tests include:

• Connector Inspection
• Connector Evaluation
• Continuity Tests
• Insertion Loss Tests of Both Multimode & Single Mode Links
• Range Tests
• Directional Tests
• OTDR Tests
• Calculation of Acceptance Values
• Reflectance Tests
• ORL Tests

*A secondary objective is 'calibration' of the trainees to perform the tests in the same manner.

The 170 hands-on activities consume 80% of the program. FiberPro 3 lectures cover chapters 2-6, 8, 10-2, and 14-20 of Professional Fiber Optic Installation, v.10.

When presented with the optional FOA CFOS/T certification examination, FiberPro 3 is a 32-hour program. When presented with both the optional FOA CFOT and CFOS/T certification examinations, FiberPro™ 3 is a 36-hour program.

Advanced Fiber Optic Splicing (FiberPro™ 4)

The primary objective of this 32-hour program is to enable trainees to perform both mid-span and pigtail splicing and OTDR testing. Trainees prepare cable ends for splicing. Trainees make and install a minimum of 24 mid-span splices and 12 pigtail splices. After splicing, trainees learn how to properly install the splices in enclosures with minimum loss. Trainees verify proper and reliable installation with both insertion loss and OTDR tests.

When presented with the optional FOA CFOT certification examination, FiberPro 4 is a 40-hour program. When presented with both the optional FOA CFOT and CFOS/S certification examinations, FiberPro 4 is a 44-hour program.

Basic Design Training

Mastering Fiber Optic Network Design (FiberPro™ 5)

The primary objective of this 32-hour program is to enable trainees to design and estimate cost for data networks that comply with the data standards. This objective requires knowledge of the capabilities of the data standards, the types of products available (fibers, cables, connectors, splices, optoelectronics). This knowledge includes advantages of each type, cost impact of choice of each type, and performances available. FiberPro™ 5 provides this knowledge.

FiberPro™ 5 presents this knowledge in 14 easy-to-understand steps. Trainees reinforce their understanding of this knowledge with 36 hands-on activities. The final activity is the development of a complete design package. From the standards to be transmitted and a map of the network, trainees develop a design package that defines: the products to be used, the performance specifications for each product, the method of connector installation, the acceptance requirements the installer must meet, and a total cost estimate. Trainees evaluate multiple connector installation methods to determine the method that provides the lowest total installed cost.

Mastering Fiber Optic Network Design is available in a 32-hour management version (FiberPro™ 5M). This version is focused on the needs of those supervising the design function and those receiving designs from external sources. PEARSON TECHNOLOGIES developed a program with a focus on designing cell phone tower networks.
