UTP Proponents Mislead And Overlook The Fiber
Argument
Sometimes,
I get very frustrated by the UTP people. Case in point
In an
article on Cat. 6 return on investment that appeared in 2003, the author
stated: to make profitable, long term business decisionsŠ
The
obvious answer to maximum return on investment is the fiber network with a
centralized cabling architecture. The author, from a company that makes
both fiber and UTP cables, neglected the obvious fiber answer, since the
article was on Cat. 6!
In
another sentence in the same article, the author stated: When cables designed to exceed Cat 5e
specificationsŠ..hit the marketŠ. The benefits for the premise networking
market grew exponentially. Again the author neglects the obvious fiber
solution: fiber transmission rates over 220 m, twice the maximum distance for
UTP, is 1.25 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet). Note that the author claimed an
increase from 100 MHz (Cat 5) to 200-350 MHz means benefits grew exponentially.
This makes me wonder what he would say about the change from 100 MHz (Cat 5) to
1250 Mbps (fiber).
In
another sentence in the same article, the author stated: Making the decision to
step up to copper based Category 6 cablingŠ. Both the obvious long-term
solution is fiber.
In
another sentence in the same article, the author stated: But the long-term
business case for selecting Category 6 cabling over Category 5e is based on
value delivered rather than on cost alone. Hold the presses: when it
comes to technological superiority, Cat. 6 is the clear winner. Again, the
fundamental assumption is that UTP is the only solution. Such arguments
overlook and mislead, which, of course, is the intent of the writer.
In
conclusion, the end user or decision maker is responsible for this
situation: he, or she, is responsible for determining the best solution for his/her
company. Unfortunately for the fiber industry, the UTP proponents play to and
reinforce the misconceptions and play to the lack of accurate understanding of
the fiber optic advantage.
